Schooling is expensive, so when Mama receives a lot of money after Big Walter's death, some is supposed to go towards this schooling. Though, in the story, Walter Jr. ends up losing a big portion of the money including what is supposed to go towards her schooling. As she lifts her headdress she knows how they are going to react. This symbolized how she is listening to her new lover, Asagai, and may possibly in the future go with him to Africa. This change is for her to connect more with where she is from after he gives her a dress from his trip that is from where he is from. this made her feel better about her situation because she was fighting back on the ideas that she felt was pushed on her for how she should look.

In this moment they are singing to a record and dancing together, in their minds they are connecting with their roots. As Ruth Irons, she informs us that Walter is drunk, and that Bennie is crazy.

After this, Mama tries to hurt Walter and Bennie stops her, staying between them. She understands
how difficult it is for her mother to have trusted him with all the money to make him happy and then have him lose it, along with her school money.
