Samuel Willenberg was a holocaust survivor and one of the last surviving prisoners of the Treblinka camp. He was 19 years old when he arrived at the Treblinka camp, where he was forced to assist in the mass murder of men, women and children. This happened 70 years ago and Samuel is now 89 years old. The Treblinka “death factory” was located in occupied Poland but was destroyed by the Nazis at the end of the war as they tried to cover their tracks. After the war he became a sculptor and made artwork related to the holocaust.

Treblinka opened on July 23, 1942 and consisted of two camps - Treblinka I and Treblinka II. Treblinka I was a forced labor camp, where more than 20,000 prisoners died from execution, exhaustion or maltreatment. Women were sent to the gas chambers after the men, so that their hair could be harvested and sold.

The impact was that it was such a traumatizing experience that they can’t forget about it even after many decades. So many of their loved ones died in that situation and that's how traumatizing it was.

More humans were killed at Treblinka in 1942 than at any other place in the history of mankind. By the end of the year, after 17,000 Jewish communities had been completely wiped out and almost all of Poland’s Jews exterminated, the camp began taking in gypsies and over 135,000 Jews from across Europe.

After Samuel Willenberg escaped from the Treblinka camp, he joined the Polish underground and fought against the Nazi's. He later served in the Polish army and participated in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. He still fought for justice even after surviving such a horrific experience.
