One major challenge I have faced this semester is how to hold students accountable for absences. Many students have been absent due to COVID so I try not to be too harsh about missing work, but then I find that students are not keeping up with class objectives. I still need to find the right balance. -Caitlin

Cell phones are a recurring issue in my class, especially during instructional time. One method I have started using is to call on students when I see phones out and ask them to answer the question we are working on. If they are unable to do the problem, I help them by scaffolding them through the question. This does two things, it helps me assess if they know the material and are on their phone because they are bored, and if they need the help understanding the problem they get real time assistance. It seems to have a better return on investment than the daily struggle of telling students to put their phones away. I am also very upfront with this policy. I tell them if I see their phones when I'm not supposed to I will be calling on them. - Aaron

I look forward to continuing to get to know and work alongside teachers at HHS. Teachers, if you have any ideas about how we (school counselors) can better collaborate and get so to know teachers, I'd love to hear them :) - Sierra

With students being on their phones, forming those in-person relationships is a soft skill that they need to practiced. I do this by asking group questions and allowing us to discuss as a class and by learning names as soon as possible.
-Rachel

Obviously many students are missing multiple days of school due to COVID. It's challenging to get those students to stay engaged and active with their schoolwork while at home. Some don't even check canvas, powerschool, or their emails during this time. They end up coming back from quarantining and have fallen way behind. Hopefully now that we have received the okay to do google meets for these students, it will improve. -Emily

I find that absences (Covid or other) are a definite problem. Students are used to not having to work as hard because they didn't work the last year and a half. A lot of students must have used a math app to do their work when they were virtual. This gives them the false sense of security that they don't have to do the work. I feel that students are working more this new semester than they did last semester. Maybe they just needed to get back into a routine. -Dina
