Poverty and inequality by

Poverty and inequality invites Global Perspectives students to explore the complex social and economic disparities prevalent in societies worldwide. This theme delves into the root causes of poverty, the mechanisms that perpetuate inequality, and the impact of these issues on individuals and communities. Typical individual and team reports might analyze the effects of poverty on access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. Students could also investigate the role of gender, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status in perpetuating inequality, or the effectiveness of government policies and international aid in addressing poverty. Additionally, students could investigate cultural attitudes towards poverty, the objectivity of media portrayals of impoverished communities, or the values underlying different approaches to poverty alleviation.

UNPACKING THE SOURCE Why do Dr. Marian Tupy and Dr. Gale Pooley “dissent” from this view? How does including a consideration of human knowledge change the way we calculate the level of resources available to us? What are the five reasons why thinking in terms of ‘time price’ instead of ‘money price’ provides a better insight into standards of living, and levels of inequality? Overall, ask students if they agree with the statement, “economics can be much more illuminating by going beyond money and atoms to knowledge and time”? How does this make us rethink population growth?

Key terms Limited resources, Finite, Human knowledge, Time prices, True prices

How is the climate crisis putting pressure on the world’s current borders? How and why does Vince suggest we rethink our ‘national pride’?
