I believe that Sedna's father is greedy and he is only using her for food, because he is starving. The author would also believe that Sedna is overconfident with her beauty, that she will only marry the most perfect men. She is also very arrogant and selfish, because she will not marry a hunter if he is not perfect. Even though he might have food that can help her and her father!

But now her father was too terrified to think. He was sure she would sink them both, so he slashed off her fingers with his knife." This shows us how greedy and disrespectful he was for cutting his own daughters fingers off.
