Reading has been shown to improve your intelligence in its three forms. The first form is "crystallized intelligence" which is the backbone for you to be able to thrive in the world. The next form is "fluid intelligence" which is the ability to solve problems, understand things, and detect meaningful patterns. The last form is "emotional Intelligence" which is the ability to accurately read and respond to your and others emotions.
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/jan/23/can-reading-make-you-smarter

This article is about a very talented young man who excelled in college football but never really enjoyed to read. During the recovery process of an injury he suffered he soon began to pick up the habit of reading books excessively and eventually writing his own book. Sometimes it takes something tragic in your life to open up your eyes to something you've always looked away from. Mitchell is thankful for the injury because it has allowed him to give reading a chance and he enjoys it.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/georgia-wr-malcolm-mitchell-proves-reading-is-fundamental-impactful/
