During this stage I feel that I resolved with autonomy. My parents allowed me to explore and learn with supervision but not intervention. I was a very independent child. The textbook says, “In toddlerhood, the critical theme is autonomy, or a sense of agency and independence.” (pg. 24).

During this stage I feel that I was encouraged to interact with my peers in school, but I had a difficult time doing that because my parents did not understand why I was having a hard time fitting in. I would say I resolved this stage with guilt. I was very slow to make multiple friends. The text says, “Children who learn how to regulate these opposing drives develop the virtue of purpose, the courage to envision and pursue goals without being unduly inhibited by guilt or fear of punishment.” (pg. 174).

During this stage I feel that I resolved with Industry. I had a sense of responsibility to handle things bigger than myself, a child, should have been handling at the time. The text says, “Developing a sense of industry, by contrast, involves learning how to work hard to achieve goals.” (pg. 220).

During this stage I feel I resolved with Identity. I started to develop my sense of self, my personal values, my opinions, and voice my wants and needs in day-to-day life. The text says that we need Identity “in order to become a unique adult with a coherent sense of self and a valued role in society.” (pg. 264).

During this stage which I am currently in (at 20 years old) I believe that I will resolve with Intimacy. I am in a stable relationship currently with my boyfriend of a year and half. We have a plan laid out for what our life is supposed to look like over the next 5 years at least. So I believe I have a good foundation laid out for continuing my successful relationship and continuing intimacy with my partner, friends, and family. The text says, “intimacy was more closely related to identity formation for women than men…” (pg. 265).
