Dred Scott was a slave, he was purchased in Missouri and then moved to Illinois which was a free state. He and his owner then moved back to Missouri, where his owner died. Scott then sued his owner's widow, claiming that since he had lived in a free state, he was a free slave. The Supreme Court ruled that they had no jurisdiction because he wasn't a citizen, so Dred Scott remained a slave.

Gideon v. Wainwright (1963)

In June, 1961 a burglary occurred outside a pool house. The police arrested Clarence Earl Gideon after he was found nearby with a pint of wine and some change in his pockets. Gideon couldn't afford a lawyer and he argued his sixth amendment right, the right to have a lawyer. The police ignored his argument and told him he had to defend himself. He defended himself poorly and he ended up going to jail. While in jail he studied law, he read that according to the sixth amendment he should have been appointed a lawyer. He hand wrote an appeal saying that his rights were ignored, and the court sided with him. Because of this case anyone who is arrested has a right to an attorney.
