The story behind the Shehnai is a blend of history, legend, music, and Indian tradition.

Long ago in India, royal courts and temples used music for ceremonies and celebrations. At that time, a simple reed instrument called the pungi was commonly played by snake charmers. Its sound was sharp and not considered suitable for royal or sacred occasions.

According to a popular legend, a musician in a king’s court experimented with the pungi and redesigned it to create a softer, more melodious instrument. This new instrument became known as the shehnai.

People believe the name came from:

“Shah” meaning king

“Nai” referring to musicians from the barber (nai) community who often performed in royal courts

So, “shehnai” roughly meant “the royal instrument played by the nai.”

The shehnai soon became closely connected with happiness and purity. It began to be played:

in temples during prayers,

at weddings,

during processions,

and at royal ceremonies.

Its warm, echoing sound was considered auspicious, meaning it brought good fortune and positive beginnings.

For many years, the shehnai remained mainly a ceremonial instrument. Then came Bismillah Khan, the legendary musician who changed its destiny.

Born in Bihar and later living in Varanasi, Bismillah Khan practiced tirelessly in temples and near the River Ganga. He brought the shehnai from wedding halls and temples onto the grand stage of Indian classical music.

One of the most historic moments in the instrument’s story happened on August 15, 1947, when Bismillah Khan played the shehnai from the Red Fort during India’s Independence celebrations.

Since then, the shehnai has become a symbol of Indian culture, spirituality, and celebration. Even today, its sound is heard at weddings and festivals, carrying with it centuries of tradition and emotion.
