Ashoka

Ashoka succeeded his father Bindusara. He was initially known as'Chandaashoka', or 'Ashoka the Fierce', because of his fiery nature.Ashoka like his grandfather and father ,followed the policy of expansion to increase his boundaries. He engaged in war with different states including Kalinga. Even Bindusara was not capable of overpowering Kalinga. Consequently, Ashoka declared a war against Kalinga. 1,00,000 Kalingans lost their lives and 1,50,000 we're injured. The same number of Mauryan soldiers was also killed. Ashoka was so touched by the result of the war that he converted into Buddhism. Buddhism was made the state religion. After his conversion to Buddhism, Ashoka undertook various measures for the well being of his subjects. He started viewing his subjects as his children. Rajukas were assigned to deliver justice in the empire. Trees were planted ,Wells were dug, and canals were built. He constructed guest houses on highways and hospitals for humans and animals. In order to have a direct communication with his subjects, he inscribed rocks and pillars edicts. Prakrit was the language used in these inscriptions,as it was the language of the masses.
Several measures were implemented by Ashoka for spreading his dhamma(dharma). Dhammamahamatras or the special people. Sangiti or the Third Buddhist Council was conducted by Ashoka. He sent his messengers to South India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar ( present day Burma) and other countries for spreading Buddhism. He emphasized on having compassion towards animals. This can be seen in various policies taken up by him. He forbade killing birds and animals asa well as slaughtering of animals in the palace kitchen.
