The “Sacred Edict” was a set of moral and governmental instructions on life by the imperial authorities. The edict was created by the Kangxi Emperor, but revised to its current state by his son, the Yongzheng Emperor (1723-1735). It was recited regularly at villages as a form of moral instruction started by the Ming but later more systematically done by the Qing. The edict was used often for local rituals conducted throughout the Qing Empire.
