Task#1: Think alouds impact reading comprehension in the classroom because they require students to, "Verbally express their normal covert mental processes when constructing meaning from a text."(pg. 8) This verbal expression deepens comprehension as they, "Question the text, wonder about it, slow down, and reread." (pg. 9

Think alouds create an amazing opportunity for students to not only learn and practice various comprehension strategies, but it allows students to monitor their own comprehension. As the facilitator to the think aloud we are able to model for students how a good reader works through the text and uses the comprehension strategies and then we guide the students by predetermining places in the text where students are able to practice the same strategy. This allows us to coach them independently in their own text to ensure that they are successful using the strategy!
"The overall notion of the gradual release of responsibility is to progress in a cyclical and fluid fashion from teachers holding the primarily instructional role to students holding the primary responsibility for their learning."(page 15)

Think alouds are great for teachers to model, guide, and coach students on our thought processes with comprehension being the goal. Teachers can model thinking aloud in reading groups, in conferences, and even in content area instruction as well.

I feel like those are the easiest to incorporate and especially easy to use if you haven't planned out your stopping points during your Think Alouds while reading. There are two strategies that I know I need to utilize more in my reading think alouds and they are synthesizing and author's purpose. I want to work on adding more of these strategies into my think alouds this year. I will definitely be planing ahead more of my read alouds to make sure that I am incorporating them.

The five areas I want to incorporate more of this school year are connect personally, visualize, synthesize, author's purpose, and monitoring and clarifying beacuse it will beneift my students to have a variety of strategies modeled for them so they can add them to their strategy tool belts!
