“Beautiful Oops” by Barney Saltsberg
This book is great at helping children think about “mistakes” as beautiful opportunities to try something new. It helps with reinforcing a growth mindset.

Extension: K-12
When your child is creating a piece of art, and they feel they have made a mistake, discuss ideas and ways that they can turn their “mistake” into a new opportunity.

I always try to instill persistence and out of the box thinking in my art studio. A growth mindset, as opposed to a fixed mindset, helps build strong future learners who know they can conquer any unforeseen challenges.

You need something to hold a page for you, so you find the closest notebook and tear a piece from the corner or you smudge some paint you didn’t know that was wet. Being left handed, I leave hand smudges on my paper all the time. The list of “oops” are endless! This piece shows how you can turn those imperfections into artwork that no one would have thought of.

I started by just mixing a bunch of paints together and I added some water and threw it all on the page. When painting mistakes are easy to make. And the most common mistakes are spills or splatters. So I took my splatter and doodled some dragons. In the picture there's a mother dragon reaching for a baby.
I even had another oops while making it. I messed up the feet so I added some black grass which I think made it look even more interesting. For the spill I set down a mason jar and poured water color (which you can see with the blue) over the edge. For the stain (which you can see in the grey) i wet the bottom of a glass with juice (i thought it would create more color lol, but it didn’t end up working). Then I let the liquid accumulate underneath both the jar and glass until it dried. Then i went over the shapes in pen, because messing up with a pen drawing can also add a really cool effect.
