Males where mostly preferred for teaching during this time, but during summer months women took over. Teachers that taught in colonial schools had very little pay with minimal qualifications. Respect increased with the more education you had. Secondary schools ultimately had the highest amount of respect. In many colonial schools teachers were shadowed do to clergy and their elite power over schools. Other than teaching duties could be anywhere from sweeping, ringing of the church bells, and teaching bible lessons.

As the colonialists of our country embarked to separate themselves from British rule, they developed practices that paralleled those they cherished in Britain. The Puritans established a two-track educational system, revolving around the obligations of religion; there was no separation between secular and religious instruction like we have today.

The initial level of the "two-track" system served primarily to equip the student body with basic needs. It is here that they learned to read and write. Students from the upper classes of society had the opportunity to continue onto the second level of their education process. Here, the students were presented with college preparatory courses that focused on the Latin and Greek classics.

The colonial school system originated around 1620, however there were no laws or sanctions from the government supporting it until 1642. Before 1642, the choice of the child's education was up to the parents. They could decide if the child was educated at home or at school or not at all. As a result of this lack of doctrine, the church and civic leaders witnessed a growing inadequacy in the occupation training of the townsmen. This realization of the degradation of intelligence gave rise to the Massachusetts Act of 1642 and 1657

This act made education a civil responsibility of the state; it was no longer up to the decision of the parents. Each town had to determine whether its youth could read and write; if they couldn't then the parents could be fined and possibly lose custody. The 1642 act did not mandate the establishment of schools, it simply forced education to be a direct concern of the local government.

This served as a revised copy of the Act of 1642 with just one difference. It mandated the establishment and support of schools. Towns of 50 houses had to appoint someone to teach the children of the town. It mandated that those teachers were to be paid by the parents. A town of 100 houses or more also had to establish a Latin grammar school and make preparation for collegiate education. Failure to follow this law would result in a fine of 5 pounds, which would be similar to a fine of 1000 dollars today.
