The book John Henry is a mythology book that dives into the culture of African Americans through the lens of John Henry as he hammers away beating the famous steam drill. This book is recommended for cultural references and the impact the railroad had on America and African Americans during the 1870’s. The moral of the story is that “Dying ain’t important. Everybody does that. What matters is How well you do your living.” This book was amazing I totally give this book a five out of five, because it had so many elements of culture, diversity, and it has real world elements.

This book uses the concept that hard work and helping others pays off. Throughout her adventure the girls friends don’t help her with anything and she is left decorating the tree and all the other task by herself. The moral to the story is that though you may do all the work it is best to share with others around you. Great book to get into the Christmas spirit with. I give this book a four out of five as it depicts a main character, and was a great book to read when getting into the spirit of Christmas.

This book jumps and shimmies through the sixties as the use fictional characters having human qualities. This book also uses a different type of rhyming and repetition of words to catch the attention of the reader. In my opinion I give this book three out of five stars due to the fact that there really wasn’t any set theme, or character it was just about a lot of dogs dancing and the places they came from such as the dog pound which was pretty funny.

“Tubby Turtle” is a old classic where the animals speak and are given human qualities. The story is about a turtle who is always late for school because he is so slow. He writes a poem stating he wishes he could do something well. He learns throughout the book, and when he his friend begins to drown, that each of us have a purpose and can do something well. It is good book for helping to teach a lesson, instruct young children about their worth, and recognizing human emotion. I give this book a three out of five stars due to it lacking some in appeal.

The book “Hansel and Gretel” is a terrific book, I really enjoyed re-reading this book and reflecting back on when I was a kid. Throughout this book Hansel and Gretel used their quick wits to help them out of the three situations they encounter. Also throughout this book all the characters somewhat grow and adapt to their environment, especially their father. Throughout the story I also felt that the author wanted to tell me that whenever you are in a pickle, don’t give up because it is only going to get better from here on out. I give this book a five out of five, because it is a well written book, that shows the strengths and weaknesses of each character, such as the father giving in to his wife wish to leave the kids in the woods. I would definitey recommend this book for all ages.

“Jack and the Bean Stalk” is a great story that involves lots of adventure and is fun to read. The character in the story overcame great adversity by learning how to work for his mother who had sacrificed so much for him. Although this may have included lying and stealing, it shows how he grows through it. All in all, I give this book a four, because it has kept me on my toes and I hate reading.

This story is a great animal fantasy story because it gives human characteristics to a cat with the ability to speak. Also this book is recommended for students who are trying to learn their alphabets. The criteria included in this book is the cat grew throughout the book, he was all about gifts but then he had a change of heart when he got lost. Another factor that I saw was important was that the kitten was able to help a old lady along the way. I would give this book a 4 out of five because it showed so many animal fantasy elements as well as the true meaning of Christmas.

The book “The Battle of the Olympians and the Titans” has many elements of high fantasy such as gods, and giants and their conflict with each other. Now throughout reading the story I discovered that the plot has a climax and a resolution. The book has so many different critical factors to it. Zeus and his brothers defeat a giant, by adapting and outsmarting the giants as well as his father. The second critical factors I saw was that the book displayed many fantasy elements such as lighting bolts, a helmet that makes you invisible, and so much more. I give this book a 4 out of 5 because it was filled with names and I am not so interested in the idea of gods.

The book “Wolf’s Coming” puts a twist to the idea portrayed in our head about wolfs being bad, instead all it is, is a surprise birthday party. Now the critical factors contained in this story involves no true character, but is set in a village. The characters throughout the story seem to have showed fear of there being a wolf in their presence, but he is just about to surprise them. I would give this book a five out of five because the author does a great job portraying every minor character such as the racoon, and the bunny to be scared and I totally fell for it myself.

The book “Michael” is a great contemporary fictional story about a kid who causes a lot of trouble in school and around him, but is a genius who fly’s a rocket in space. Now the prominent theme of this story is, that though you may seem like a trouble maker or an odd ball, you still have something to offer in life big or small. Throughout this story everybody thought Michael was not going to go far, as they depicted him as an outcast, and a grungy stinky kid, but he turned out to be an astronomical success as an astronaut. I would rate this book to be two thumbs up, with a five star rating. It was very fun to read and made you ponder about who Michael is and what he does.

The book “The Man who Named the Clouds” is an autobiography that’s explains a true event about Luke Howards life, discovering the nomenclature of clouds. This book is rich in information of the different clouds and even uses a lot of Latin included in the text, which can make it hard for students to understand and comprehend the readers thoughts. All in all, this book is still a delightful book that is about discovery and not giving up on your dreams even though you may get burned a few times. I would definitey give this book a three out of five stars due to the fact that it was hard to understand, maybe be useful in eight grade sciences.

This book is a rhyming story that uses repetition to display the journey a postman takes delivering mail. This book shows many poetic elements, that are original ideas of an ordinary person in his day to day adventures. I believe the plot is very appealing to young children because it displays characters from nursery rhymes such as Cinderella, the Three Little Pigs and so many other characters many children are familiar with. As for the rating I give this book a five out of five, because it was appealing and easy to comprehend for all age groups. It also portrays the actual duties of a postman.

The story, E.T., is about a young boy who is looking for a friend. One night he hears a noise and goes to find out what it is, and finds a goblin. The story takes the reader through a variety of events, scientists looking for the goblin, and friendship. It is fun to watch, Elliott, the little boy, treat ET as a friend, dressing him up and trying to pull him off as human. And yet, he gives up his friend, so that ET
can go home. It does make connections between moral lessons and happy endings. I give this book a five out of five stars for family entertainment, visual appeal and relating friendship.

A Book Made into a Movie: "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak

The book is about a boy named Max who made mischief one night and his mother called him wild thing. When he went to bed, in his room a forest grew, an ocean rose, and took him to where the wild things are. They made him king and the wild things got. . . wild. So Max sent them to bed without supper. He became lonely and sailed back to his home where he is loved. I believe this book does a good job of making connections between animal characters and human qualities, recognizing that there are good, bad, wise and foolish characteristics, and having a happy ending. I give this book a five out of five stars for imagination.

The book, "Uni the Unicorn", is about the only unicorn that believes that girls are real. This book definitely uses a plot twist in that instead of girls believing that unicorns are real, this book uses a unicorn that believes girls are real. Even though his friends laugh at him, he still believes and imagines what a little girl would be like. What he doesn't realize is that somewhere, not so far away, is a little girl who believes that unicorns are real as well. This book not only uses the plot twist, but also understands the setting, which takes the real world and adds supernatural elements and imagined worlds. I think that this book would be appealing to young girls and give this a four out of five stars for its imagination and fantasy elements.

This book is a great book for all ages. This book talks about the feelings that we all have and how they affect us in our everyday life. Andy savage is a Christian author, so this book is faith based but from the perspective of a child and how our emotions can lead us to do things that we may regret, but there is a true savior God that frees us from those sins. The critical factors entailed in this book is the author really shows growth throughout the readers experience, and how to overcome that sense of fear, regret, and pain. I rate this book a five out of five, because it helps you understand feelings and emotions.

Looking through all the pictures and elements I saw that there was only Caucasian males and females in the book, there really were no signs of other ethnicities. Another critical factor I found throughout the book, is that it was filled with information, such as, how big the Texas Giant is, which is fifty-five feet tall. As for the rating I give this book a 2 out of five stars it was super short and really didn’t have that great of an ending.

"A Giraffe and a Half" is a hilarious tongue twister poem filled with goofy pictures and fictional characters. Not only is this book great for understanding poetry concepts, it touches on math concepts of measuring. The critical factors included in this book is it is very interesting, descriptive, and has non-racial aspects to the book. It also is well written and has a set plot and theme. I give this book a five out of five star rating because it was engaging, made me laugh and is a tongue twister which makes it fun to read.

A Story About School: “The Principal from the Black Lagoon” by Mike Thaler

This is a story about a boy who gets sent to the principal’s office on the third day of school. He hears that she is a monster and begins imagining all types of scary case scenarios, like the rug is red so it won’t show the blood and she carries a 12 foot paddle with spikes. He realizes at the end that she is a nice lady who does no harm. This is a good imagined story set in a real school setting. It identifies important characters, has conflict and the reader understands the characters through the imagery. I give this book a four out of five stars for originality and plot.

Book Made Into A Movie: “Bambi – Friends of the Forest” by Felix Salten

“Bambi” is a classic tale of a deer and her friends in the forest. The friends go off to play and loose track of where they are when a warning comes that there is a fox here. As Bambi tries to protect her friend, the fox takes off after her. Her father comes to rescue her. The book is about learning valuable lessons and being true to your friends. There is conflict, triumph and animals that talk. I give this story a three out of five stars for adventure and being a classic. It does lack some in visual appeal.
