Keeping power really depends on the people you rule and how they see you, so having them believe in your best traits is the smartest way to stay in favor. Still, sometimes rulers have to do the dirty work and can't always be kind and humane. Sometimes they have to behave in a way that others might consider 'bad', but as a leader, you have to know what's best in the long term.
