Formative - ongoing and provides information needed to adjust teaching and learning. It gives important feedback to students letting them know they are on the right track and helps the teacher determine whether students are ready to move on to the next task.
Summative - more of a singular event at the end of an instructional unit or module. Then get the full picture of how well students are performing and whether or how instruction needs to be adjusted, a teacher needs both formative and summative assessments.

Four Corners

This formative assessment activity is a great way to get students actively involved within the classroom to measure their learning and understanding. The teacher labels the corners according to the topic presented that day. For example, opinions could be asked, "Do you think uniforms should be worn to school?" Each corner would be labeled either "Strongly Agree" 'Agree" "Disagree" or "Strongly Disagree" The students would go stand in the corner that represents their views. The teacher would then see who can back up their opinion with facts. It can also be used to prepare for a multiple choice test and teachers could measure how well they are understanding the material.

They are also normally "high stakes" which means that they are usually high in point value.
