What is a boycott? How did this play a role in the 1980 and 1984 olympics?

A boycott is refusing to do something to protest. The 1980 olympics were in Moscow, and a lot of countries boycotted it because of the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan. In 1984, the Soviet Union boycotted the Olympics held in the US.

One way is the athletes competing against each other, to see who was better. They wanted to know which country was superior. Another way was to see which country would get the most medals. The more medals you have, the more you would prove that you were the better nation. A third way is they competed to see who was better and more athletically gifted. Both countries wanted their athletes to be better because it was a way to show which country was better.

What 3 comparisons could be made in the Cold War Olympics to present day Olympics?

One comparison is the US refused to send its officials to the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. Similar to the boycott in 1980, where the US refused to send officials or athletes. Another comparison is how the USA and Russia still have a little bit of a rivalry in many sports, especially hockey. They are a bit less hateful towards each other, but there is still a little. The difference is the games are a lot less serious. It isn’t close to as big of a deal, because the countries aren’t at odds.
