People quickly grew apart as some wanted a constitutional monarchy while others wanted a republic without a king. This battle to decide how to change France led to king Louis to try and escape. They were later caught because someone recognized him on a coin. Although it had no legislative abilities, it was the most corrupted and power hungry in almost all of France's history. During this time, Napoleon, a young general was conquering left and right. He later heard word of a political uprising and decided to fight against it and led a successful coup' de'tat against the directory in 1799.
