During my school days, education was very important to me as my parents were struggling to educate my siblings and me to bring changes in our lives. It's absolutely their struggle to transform our lives through education that made me an educationalist today.

As I read through the "Evolution and future challenges of development education" by Mesa from "The charitable and assistance-based approach to Global-citizenship education", I relived my experiences of textbook focussed learning to digital teachings in my life journey.

As I read in the research paper by Mesa, even today the development of education has not reached all. Gender inequality, poverty, and many other practical issues bring hinder to many people from not able to receive a developed education.

My exposure to teaching life and UCD education is helping me to change my ideas and views about global learning. And I try to share it with my students, teachers, and others who come across in my daily life.

I believe that Goal 4 - Quality education, is the heart of sustainable development. It is a human right, a drive for development, and an instrument for reducing poverty, which can improve health, gender equality, and peace. It’s supported by three key pillars; ensuring access to quality teachers; providing the use of quality learning tools and professional development; and establishing safe and supportive quality learning environments.

The education system is extremely developed in metropolitan regions for people with excellent income sources but still needs to be developed for countryside zones as well as for people who are below the poverty line. Due to this quality education has not reached all. Children living in poverty face many problems in accessing good education. Due to a lack of trained teachers, inadequate education materials, and poor infrastructure, they are led to unemployment, child labour, abuse, and violence.

The female learning level in India is indeed at a low level, which is an additional cause for the low-down literacy rate in India. Despite many struggles still, female children need to call forth to focus on education through awareness, removing stereotypical thinking, and providing added benefits to increase female literacy. As there also is a large population in India free education is not possible, but education policy can encourage both genders to go to school and follow up on education for the development of the country.

The above systems can help oneself, family, and our country to overcome the struggles to attain quality education for all particularly for underprivileged children. From my personal experience education can alone help the backward students to acquire chances to reveal their potential and contribute to the direction of building a healthier world.

Technology will enhance the accessibility, innovations, and quality of education all around the world and for forthcoming generations. Therefore, quality education is a need and has the impact to create great change to improve our lives, nations, and country.

Global Citizenship Education in our education settings or schools is carried out by many Volunteers and NGO’S. Two important ways of functioning have inspired me the most. The first one is CMCA. It is a 22-year-old non-profit headquartered in Bangalore to transform undeveloped young minds. School programs are designed to round their education by adding the important element of citizenship, and life skills education and transform them into concerned, thinking, and active citizens. The above idea is used in various states in India to involve students and address the issues of social, political, economic, and environmental locally, nationally, and internationally.

Weblink about CMCA - https://www.cmcaindia.org/what-we-do/

The second function that I would like to share is the Children’s Parliament. In our school, we practice this. Students are divided into groups during club activity time. Each group is designated as the state in their desired respective names and elects the Chief-Minister, Education Minister, Health Minister, Social Minister, and Sports Minister under the Governor being the class teacher. This cabinet along with other members of parliament elects the President and the Vice-President.

Through this, students learn social responsibility, learn to
co-operate and co-ordinate with other members, develop their knowledge in various fields of activities and understand the education lessons for democracy.

https://resources4rethinking.ca/en/resource/the-childrens-parliament

This activity aims to help students learn how decisions are made and to be responsible for making some decisions by themselves. Through this activity, students learn about their rights and responsibilities as citizens of the world. Our students take initiative to clean the surroundings in our area with greater initiative. They plant trees, regular visits to the orphanage to share food and clothing, and spread awareness on streets and parks.

Education brings empowerment in student’s life and they bring a difference in the local environment and community, creating caring local and global citizens.

The NATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY highlights the purpose of holistic education. That is to plan the students for educational accomplishment but then furthermore empower them to understand the tasks of being. Every Institution takes initiative to focus on the all-round development of the students.

The modernization approach encourages to move from textbook-focused learning to life skills, vocational skills, and the tech world. As a headmistress, I keep insisting on my teachers on the importance of holistic education. Teachers feel that portions are too vast to complete and the beliefs among parents are that grades are very significant for future life.

The pandemic helped lots of institutions in changing the minds of our parents. Trying very hard to convince the parents and students to shift from physical classes to online was a great step toward the new beginning. After the pandemic back to physical classes we have added life skills classes like the computer, dance, karate, art, craft, value education, sports activities, and music to groom the student’s personalities to uplift themselves and society. Through life skills parents expressed that students do need all-around development education to grow in life. Till today it’s a struggle to convince parents but we as an institution do believe this will become a reality to succeed in our curriculum.

Imagine a globe all over the place each person is creating an attempt to be caring, energetic, and enthusiastic about life and reduce the use of Earth’s resources. I would like to encounter the planet with more serene, equivalent, abundant resources for natural surroundings, fresh water, and foodstuff for everyone.

Global warming would decrease, men and women would be considered equal, no discrimination based on color, caste, religion, etc. Respecting each other, valuing the laws, promoting justice and education free for all.

Our world would be so spotlessly clean, people would be allowed to follow any religion and faith and work together with courage, determination, and peace among all nations. Take steps together to work towards building the ideal world into a happy reality.

The above dream of my world in 200 years, will be a world of mutual respect between poor and rich and the quality of life is improved.

I do teach climate change in my teaching in school. During our Annual Sports meet, we focussed on climate change. In the primary, each standard focussed games in showing how we can protect Mother Earth and act against climate change. We encourage our students to say that, “Change is possible and act out today”.

During our moral value classes and assemblies, I try to convey the messages and keep reminding them about the emergency in action to save our environment.

The following steps to be followed are given to students as they themselves feel how climate change has affected their lives.

1. Simply turn off the lights and fans as they leave the classroom

2. To use more LEDs

3. Unplug devices when not in use

4. To use natural ventilation and lighting

5. To save water

6. To plant native flowers and shrubs

7. Take shorter showers

8. Use bicycles than bikes and cars

9. To use public transport

10. Recycle plastic, glass, paper, and cardboard

11. Buy local groceries

12. To save food

13. Minimize the buying of clothes

14. Eat less meat

15. Plant trees

16. To limit airplane travel

17. Use solar power

18. To be wise in digital footprint

19. Speak out about actions to reduce climate change

20. To join climate action groups

It is not easy for young students to follow the above 20 points.

In our culture, even after growing up, we consult our elders for any decision-making. As we grew up everything was decided for us. But after I joined religious life the power to decision-making was given to me totally. Whether it is small or big we need to own up to our own decisions. From there I tried to pick up my courage. Not all my decisions were correct. But I learned from my mistakes.

Every individual needs to decide their path in life. My parents gave me the freedom to choose my own way of life as a religious. And till today I am happy with my decision and my parents also support me with it. I am very grateful to them and my siblings.

Regarding my studies at UCD, I took the time and discussed with others who did this study. Coping with my studies and my principal job is not easy. After long-time discussions and enquires I decided to study. This courage at the age of 17 I did not have. But now life has taught me many lessons on how to choose my choices in order to grow in my life.

In making any decisions in my personal or school life I always talk to someone who would guide and direct me on the right path then I pray and make my decisions. Consulting an expert with certain decisions regarding an issue in the school has helped me a lot.

I always consult teachers regarding any decisions that we need to make for students for the betterment of their lives during a monthly staff meeting and whenever the need arises. I feel that experience in life helps a person to make better decisions and everybody has the inner power to make a decision.
