In the end, the piece achieves sublime craftsmanship. But it also promises a deep and complex sense of logic for the listener. Through its echoes, its climbs and descents, its circular patterns, it seems to be saying: nobody travels alone. Nothing is unconnected from anything else. Page 210

But music doesn't have to be set at right angles. It does not have to be square or symmetrical or neatly sequential. There are other shapes and motions a musician or band composer can make to achieve the condition of music, or what the composer Edgard Varése called "organized sound."
Page 207

At first I was confused by Ben Ratliff's idea of linking because it seemed to be a vague concept. However as I continued to read, I agreed with the idea he presented. The way I understand linking is in two forms: Linking idea to idea and having two ideas that are in unison be links. The first idea is definitely exemplified by Cantus In Memoriam Benjamin Britten as each phrase is linked together at a slower tempo to emphasize the importance of each note and chord being played. The second idea I believe is exemplified by Braking Through which is played by London Music Works. In the beginning of the piece, the composer has a similar structure, in regards to linking, as Cantus In Memoriam Benjamin Britten. But after awhile in the piece, two main melodies come together to be "linked" as they play out in contrast to one another. Similar to a loop making software when a DJ is making a song and decides to combine two musical elements or more
