203-group Eshdavlatova Hilola

If we want to learn about the history of the English language, we start from the Old English period, which ranges from 450 to 1150. So, the tribes from what we now know as Germany Denmark and the Netherlands united and called themselves the Anglo-Saxons. They began their journey across the North Sea to the British Isles. These tribes had their own dialects, which we now refer to as Old English and the Celtic language was originally spoken by the native British.

Later, Viking invaders introduced Old Norse into the English lexicon during the 8th and 9th centuries.

For example:

Old English – Heafon

Old Norse – Sky

Old English – AEĞ

Old Norse – Egg

Moving on to the Middle English period, it lasted from 1150 to 1500. During this era, thousands of French words were added to the English vocabulary and many remarkable literary works were written. One of them was Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, written in the 14th century.

Finally, we arrive at the Early Modern English period, which took place between 1500 and 1700. This was also the time of the Renaissance, a cultural movement that began in Italy. During this period, the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg played an important role in the development of English. Between 1400 and 1700, the "Great Vowel Shift" occurred. In 1611, King James had the Bible published, which also contributed to the development of the English language.

Today, over 1.5 billion people speak English. It continues to grow through technology, social media and communication. In conclusion, now we speak a developed version of English shaped by its rich history.
