I have some training in Restorative Practices. Restorative conversations are a component of that meant to heal and reconcile through understanding each person's perspective, the harm done, and a plan to pursue reconciliation/justice etc. for what happened. The conversation has specific questions and one person responds at a time. The practices overall steer away from punitive types of punishment and work more toward relationship building, prevention, etc.

It's a group (big--like a class, or small--like a few students) that focuses on conversation to "restore justice". I have seen the purpose be to bring community and healing. Students and the teacher work together with various question starters and community-building questions to help everyone feel comfortable and heard. The hope is that students would be able to resolve conflict on their own by learning strategies and hearing different perspectives. It eventually should help to bring unity, peace, and understanding. I have used restorative circles with the gang populations we had in MKE and Waukesha and it was helpful in reducing violence and conflict in the school and on the streets.
