On September 17th, 1862, America would see the bloodiest battle of the civil war at Antietam. In Washington county Maryland in the course of one day, over 22,000 people died in the most brutal ground battle of the entire war.

The emancipation proclamation marks a turning point in the war because it changed the values of the Union army and shifted the war into a war for freedom.

Confederate Surrender at Appomattox (April 9th 1865)

In Appomattox country Virginia, on the morning of April 9th 1865, approximately 4 years after the start of the civil war, Confederate general Robert Lee surrendered his army to Union general Ulysses Grant, Marking the end of the American Civil war.

The Battle of Bull Run (July 21st 1861)

This battle is important to understanding the brutality of the civil war.

President Lincoln Declines War Elephants from Siam (February 3rd 1862)

On February 3rd, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln was offered several war elephants by the king of Siam (modern day Thailand) to help aid the Union forces fighting in the civil war. Although he politely declined the offer this act shows that the world was watching the civil war.

A Confederate Submarine Sinks the USS Housatonic (February 17th 1864)

On February 17th 1864 the Union ship, the USS Housatonic was sunk in Charleston Harbor South Carolina by an early confederate submarine which also sank after destroying the Union ship. This event marks just how much new technology had been developed and was put to use for this war.

Abraham Lincoln is Re-Elected for President (November 8th 1864)

On November 8th 1864 President Abraham Lincoln is re-elected in Washington D.C, this event is important because without Lincolns re-election the war could have shifted into a more diplomatic conclusion and the emancipation of the U.S would likely not have happened.

President Abraham Lincoln is Assassinated (April 14th 1865)

On April 14th 1865, only 5 days after the Confederacy surrendered, President Abraham Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth (a confederate sympathizer and stage actor) while watching a play in Washington D.C, Lincoln becomes the first U.S president to be assassinated and Andrew Johnson took office soon after.
