Perhaps read an article/story by someone of their same culture or ask them to explain how something would like in their house if they were to do it. That should help you connect their culture and meet state standards for end of year tests. In English, almost anything can be molded to fit the standards so there are lots of opportunities to bring in different perspectives. I'm sure the other subjects have that too.
--Rachael Baker

I teach foreign language and it has been proven that immersion is the best way for children to learn a second language and so some people feel like a second language should be banned to force kids to get better in English. This really doesn't necessarily work in high school because I see French speakers work in French to learn English or figure out math which would be almost impossible if we banned a second language. There needs to be lots of scaffolded language for ELL learners in ALL classes and throughout the school to help these students succeed.

Honor your heritage and embrace the new? Land of the free and all that.
