He goes in a time machine with the safari guide, Travis and two other hunters. Travis warns Eckels about how killing the wrong animal in the past can lead to catastrophic consequences in the future. When they arrive in the past, they follow a metal path to where they'll hunt the T-rex. After some time, they find the T-rex and they shoot at it, while that's happening Eckels gets knocked off the trail a bit and picks up some mud on his shoe. They then return to the time machine and go back home, but when they return it's a bit different than than what is was before. The words on the flier for the safari are spelled differently and a different president was elected. Eckels takes the mud from his shoe and realizes that he accidentally killed a butterfly.
