Unlike most artists during the Renaissance movement, McKay was born and raised in Jamaica and migrated to the US. His poems talk about America with a mix of love and hate and a mix of pain and pleasure.

Here is one of McKay's poems titled 'Pleasure'
Although she feeds me bread of bitterness,
And sinks into my throat her tiger's tooth,
Stealing my breath of life, I will confess
I love this cultured hell that tests my youth!
Her vigor flows like tides into my blood,
Giving me strength erect against her hate.
