Do you think a print ad can ever tell the whole truth? why or why not?

Print Ads can never tell the entire truth because a significant part of an ad is the viewer's point of view and how they understand and analyze the ad put up for them to observe. The real issue cannot fully get across to the entire audience. Ads too are meant to sell an idea of the company so factually too there might be alterations made on behalf of the team behind the advertisement’s production.

How did the poet's choice of words and phrases impact your understanding of the poem's meaning? Did any specific lines or metaphors stand out to you?

The poet’s choice of words and phrases helps set the tone of the story in a much deeper and disheartening way. It emphasizes the immense grief and discomfort felt by both the prisoners and the indigenous groups, the Aboriginals. The way Judith Wright framed her poem makes us not only feel ourselves in the old prison but it also helps us exactly visualize how much of the pain and suffering is still inflicted by the natural forces to date.

“and like a bone it sings

a bitter song of air.”

This is the line that stands out the most for me because Judith Wright here speaks not just about how cruelty is still felt but also shows how humans will not know that complete history or our origin. It is the natural forces that will only ever know the truth behind the myths and wars we learn about. Not just the following, the conceited behavior of humans is also implicated in the following.

How does the poem "Wattle Tree" help us appreciate the beauty of nature and the role our emotions play in our understanding?

Wattle Tree talks about the duality of nature. The Protector and The Provider. Primarily focusing on the provider aspect of trees, we understand - via Judith Wright’s words- the beauty of growth and the power of truth held and felt by nature, a wattle tree to be very exact. The symbolic title, along with reference to the ever-helping natural sources, we understand the selfish needs of a human and the arrogance held by the urban civilization who would be nothing today if not for the presence of the natural forces.

In what ways does "RTAY" encourage us to examine the connections between art, language, and the way we perceive the world? How might this exploration align with the area of the arts (AOK)?

Art is a language. The meaning behind each stroke, each expression drawn and painted expresses a million feelings. In Request To A Year, we explore the interconnection of art and human expression. We understand that on occasions where verbal language cannot help us, we have other forms of communication to express ourselves. In the poem, we understand the pain and the helplessness of the mother and the need to express her views via a painting. This side also brings out the artistic presence she possesses. The poem reflects on how the grandmother’s instincts were first to express her view instead of being irrational and trying to dramatically save her son and fit in the patriarchal view of “how a mother should be.”

How does analyzing JW's poems on Aboriginals prompt us to reflect on the universality of certain themes and issues that connect diverse communities around the world? In what ways do they offer insights into the shared experiences and challenges faced by indigenous groups/adivasi.

JW’s writing type revolves around helping change the perspective of the reader, it makes them consider the what-ifs and the whys of issues that may seem negligible. Her poems shed light on topics that may seem regional (Indigenous Cultural Displacement) but are felt to some extent all over the world. From the research paper discussed in class, we understand that the colonial forces have been the cause of the same suffering felt by the indigenous communities in not just Australia but also India, The United States, etc. Poets have a way of presenting the problems and the perspective of these “tribal” communities and the disasters they face every day due to the need of others to be selfish. The cause of the sufferings may have started centuries ago but the loss of identity is still missing. Talking about the cultural shift and the loss of traditions, JW brings forth a problem that is unspoken because people are too entitled to recognize and understand the result of greed.

What are some unique aspects found exclusively within indigenous tribal cultures that set them apart from our own culture and society?

The separation between communities for being “modern” and “traditional” has been shown by the need to globalize history and bury emotions. The requirement to be modern today reflects on our societal status. Ignoring the fact that we are us because of our long history, the same so-called modern society feels the need to hide all the traces of any indigenous groups. JW brings the following topic out by elaborating on a simple, coming-of-age ritual location for the Aboriginals. She shows how the livelihood of the indigenous groups has been threatened since the day colonizers set foot in Australia and how they successfully managed to rip away the very base of their lives. She exclaims her deepest sorrows caused by her own ancestors and brings the spotlight on how the indigenous identity has been buried. With Bora Ring, JW wants us to consider how the growth of the world is possible without the destruction of not just nature but also the history and lives of the indigenous groups that still live in their habitual way instead of forcing them to be someone they don’t recognize.

Bora Ring and TOK-

Tribal Culture has been around for longer than we ever will be. Their dedication to worship the earth for everything it gives us, for being the ultimate provider sets them apart from other cultures. Regardless of the countries they belong to, indigenous groups around the world believe in a life of working together, living in peace and harmony, and being grateful for their provider. Unlike the world we live in, the indigenous groups stay true to their feelings. Respect towards their elders is portrayed by getting tattoos, the use of natural medicines is seen also the music and dances for occasions can be seen. The rich traditional and divinity beliefs, the clothing, and the unique living conditions set their culture apart from the world. Though apart and have no contact with each other, indigenous groups around the world share the same integrity and devotion towards being true to themselves and their identity.

From the discussions we have has in the class about Guzy and Beltra & inputs from this article, put down thoughts on how the images we analysed contribute to global awareness of complex issues and conflicts, and what role can photography play in shedding light on such issues worldwide?

The stillness of the world, the capturing of the perfect moment, the understanding and evaluation of the said situation, Photography is one of the most difficult forms of art which highlights the real world from a different perspective. Photograph, in general, is the best way to understand the restfulness of the never-stopping world. Photographers around the world highlight the issues and problems faced every day, making others question why something is happening and why it is normalized. Guzy and Beltra’s method of showing issues in our society showcases a very disturbing outlook on reality. Beltra’s photographs bring a more aesthetic appeal to such an issue that threatens the existence of human civilization, it is ironic how a pretty picture is more disastrous than what can be seen. As for Guzy, the essence of the event weighs down on us because of how the misuse of power is seen and felt. Similarly, photographers around the world play a key role in spreading awareness about everything and bringing forth the vulnerability of the world as a whole.
