Why Employers Hired Young Children

Employers at factories or coal mines preferred to have younger children to work instead of grown adults since they knew that children were unable to read or write, so they would force them into signing contracts that they could not read. Many children were signing up for things that they probably did not want to do, and at such young ages they were put into labor work. Women would get payed about a dollar per week they work, but they had to leave their homes in the country side in order to move to the city to work everyday. Boys also developed black lung disease at a very young age due to always inhaling the fine coal dust. They also hired young boys since they had better health conditions

- Many families had to make sure someone in their family earned money
- Just one member doing work and earning money was not enough financial support
- Families did not have the money to afford a proper education so they taught them how to work
- Children were under payed and put into hard labor work, but the families with low poverty still needed the money
- There was a high demand in labor
- Child labor began to rise during the late 1700's and early 1800's
- Child labor finally came to a stop when there were 2 acts of independence in 1922
