After reading a little more than 50 pages in the story, I can say that I am enjoying the story. The author invites everyone into his personal life and his feelings about the war, and even tells the reader what conflicts he went through that he refused to disclose even to his family. Although the beginning was quite slow, it also showed a sequence of flashbacks and revealed the death of a member in the unit and the impact is has on the members on the team, including the author himself

After reading just over 50 pages, I found this book quite interesting. One thing that kind of annoys me, however, is the repetition of the words "they carried". But, after seeing the words repeated a around 10 at first but was eventually able to become immune to it. If the book didn't repeat the phrase so much than my early rating of the book would be higher. I would rate the first 50 pages 8/10.

After reading the first 50 pages I can say that the book is not that interesting to me, but the story has a interesting writing style and some of the tools used to write it was a little bit of dialogue and foreshadowing. Also the book was a little annoying at first and repetitive, but I can live with it. Eventually after all the repetition the book kind of starts to get a little better and the one part of the book I did enjoy was how the author shows his foreshadowing and he shows it by the use of flashbacks.

How do y'all feel about the protagonist? At this point I find it difficult to determine who exactly is the protagonist. Tim O'Brien tells different stories of the war, and the stories aren't usually in chronological order. With every passing chapter, he can be telling the story from his point of view or another point of view of one of his teammates. I quite enjoy Tim's character, however; the stories he tells are different. He experiences many mixed emotions while in Vietnam that he expresses internally. He shows no weakness while at Vietnam, but 20 years later after the war he lets the emotions flow in the only way he knew how to; in his writing.

I also agree with you Omar about the uncertainty of the protagonist in the book, but the one person that I think that could be labeled as the protagonist is the character Tim O'Brien. I think he could be labeled as the protagonist due to the fact that most of the book is his personal life and his experiences throughout the war. I also can see why you are kind of unsure about the protagonist because of all of O' Brien's many war stories and all of his mixed emotions towards everyone , but in my opinion the only person that can possibly be labeled as the protagonist has to be O'Brien himself. The question that I have for you guys is how do you think the many settings in the book affect O'Brien's mind set and personal life?

I agree with both of you on Tim O'Brien being the main protagonist. Even though he is the narrator, he is still involved in the story. However, for this specific book, it wasn't the easiest job to find out who it was since there doesn't really seem to be any kind of antagonist at the moment.

Did y'all find anything confusing so far about the book? To me so far the book is very indirect and has no true plot or conflict. I am very confused about what is going on in the story due to the fact that the protagonist is just giving random flashbacks throughout the whole story and the flashbacks would not have nothing to do with what was going on at that point in time in the book. another thing that is confusing is the fact that there is no true antagonist, and since there is no antagonist the whole plot and conflict is being thrown off to me.

I found the fact the author even considered repeating the words "the things they carried" as much as he did mind boggling. It gets quite annoying when i continue seeing that phrase around 10 times per page. Some things like Kiowa's death were also a little confusing for me because i was just unable to see the picture the author was attempting to place in to my mind. The most confusing thing in this book for me is the fact that there is no true antagonist.

I can relate to Tim O' Brien the most because when he was getting drafted to the military, he was considering moving to Canada. I would do anything possible to avoid becoming a soldier. Unlike Tim, i don't care if people make fun of me for not going to war. I won't let the embarrassment get to my head and change my decision.

The character I can relate to would also be Tim O' Brien. I can relate to him due to the fact that he shows the trait of a very strong self conscious and If he makes a terrible decision in life it will eat at him until he goes and fixes his mistake. I can really relate to the trait that Tim has because I also have a very strong conscious and if I made a bad decision I would not be able to live with my self until I correct the decision.

To be completely honest, I really struggled to find any kind of symbols in this book because there's not really much of a story to get behind and the book is just about the author's past. However, if I were would to choose a symbol, it would be a person wielding a gun because they decide whether you get to live or die just like how a higher power you may believe in controls your fate.

The one symbol that I can honestly say that I found throughout the book was the symbol of death, and it was one of the main symbols because of the time period that the book takes place in. I think that death symbolizes all of the countless and innocent victims that were killed because of the war in Vietnam. To be completely honest after the symbol of death I could not find anymore symbols throughout the book , due to the fact that the story kind of jumps all over the place.
