The project I embarked on was the bin-free Singapore Botanic Gardens (SBG) . It was an innovative idea which I had not heard of before. It was a pleasant experience working together with my group members and mentor these few months. Through the project I was able to hone my soft skills and gain a better understanding of the environmental sustainability that a bin free SBG would bring about. Conducting field survey to investigate the vistors' feelings towards a bin free initiative was a new experience. Unfortunately, we could not carry out a bin removal trial but the results from the field survey was positive. It showed that the respondents were willing to carry their trash out of the park even though it is inconvenient for them once they understand the benefits and reason for a bin free botanic garden. The whole project was a delightful experience and hopefully it will be possible to have a bin free SBG in the future.

We set up a Google Form at the site to allow visitors to the quarry to contribute to the project. While the initial aim was to reduce NParks’ manpower required, it slowly evolved into a citizen science project, and that in my opinion goes a long way in achieving our goal of creating a City in Nature. It allows members of the public to understand more about nature, and helps them to develop a greater appreciation for it and for the efforts of NParks and other nature-related organisations

I had a memorable and insightful experience with my team members and mentors. As a landscape architecture student, this program was very relevant to what i am studying and it has helped to enhance my learning in planting and biodiversity. Nonetheless, it was fun working with people from majors.

My aspirations for our city in nature is that people can appreciate more of nature, have a stronger bond with nature. I hope that we can restore nature that was loss into Singapore urban landscape and play a part in saving Mother Earth.

The Youths had been amazing, everyone made efforts to come together and work on the projects despite their busy schedules. There are definitely challenges along the way especially with the covid phase 2 heightened alert restrictions, however, they did their best & used every available time and window to complete the surveys, public engagements whenever they can. So it has been a fruitful session, and I hope that everyone enjoyed the journey regardless if u completed the full project or not, it's the journey and new friendships made that makes all the difference.

This is just the beginning, not the end!

My team planted 56 trees at Thomson Nature Park and engaged with youth from Youth corps singapore, this helped to raise awareness of trees as a food source for animals, carbon sequestration and a habitat for animals. We also introduced the history of Thomson Nature Park and the Han Wai Toon's rambutan orchard/garden.

My aspiration for City in Nature is to reduce human wildlife conflict and live with wildlife harmoniously, more naturalised waterways and pathways for ecological connectivity, more tree planting events to strengthen our forests, more citizen science programmes and ecology research.
