Medical Marijuana is the use of the whole, unprocessed marijuana plant or its extracts, to treat some illnesses and conditions. Marijuana, however, is not FDA approved for the medicinal use. Issues surrounding Medical Marijuana are when it is taken at low levels which leads to addiction and can turn into use at chronic levels. The side effects of taking Marijuana are hallucinations, increased heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, tremor/seizures and anxiety/panic attacks. Other issues that happen with Marijuana are that it is extremely addictive, making it hard for someone to quit. Once the high of the drug starts to wear off, the individual starts to take more and more of the drug in order to feel a high. This can be a big issue because that leads to more serious problems like stroke, kidney failure and death. The reason why there is an issue with marijuana being used for medical reasons is because it interferes with balance, attention and coordination. Also, there are some studies being done to see if Marijuana is a cause of cancer itself. But, many other people believe that Medical Marijuana has many health benefits that can treat illnesses and help save peoples lives.

1. One of the big issues surrounding Medical Marijuana according to Live Science, is that it is highly addictive and can even make other drugs that you are taking addictive as well.
2. According to Live Science, THC, found in Marijuana, interferes with the attention, judgment and balance areas inside the brain. These effects make Marijuana so harmful and are a main reason why people believe it is too risky for medical use.
3. The American Addiction Center reports that physiological effects in the brain occur, even under normal application of the drug. This would include memory issues, that make it hard to form new memories and learning new things.

4. Other concerns for the use of Marijuana as a medicine, is that the Journal of the American Heart Association says the chemical is linked to increase the heart rate to 50 beats per minute and can go for about 3 hours. This is can lead to heart rhythm disorders, stroke heart attacks or even death.

5. The American Addiction Center also discusses the effects of Marijuana could impact people mentally because of a production of dopamine that affects mood. This produces problems of depression and anxiety in its users.

I personally feel that Medical Marijuana should be allowed in the United States. I chose this project to see the side health benefit side of things because before this I only knew the bad side of Marijuana, not the side that could actually help people. I understand that there are many health risks involved in taking Marijuana, but I feel that if it is being taken at small doses to relieve pain and other effects, then it should be allowed. According to U.S. National Library of Medicine, Medical Marijuana is used for the treatment of vomiting and nausea in chemotherapy patients. I feel like it is very beneficial to have a medicine to help people who are going to the pain of their condition, to have pain relief in some way. Secondly, the American Academy of Neurology reports that Marijuana has helped reduce muscle spasms of Multiple Sclerosis patients. This is very beneficial because it allows the patients to relax and not have to go through the pain of spasms of their condition. Lastly, the New England Journal of Medicine found that Marijuana also helps reduce seizures in epilepsy patients. Medical Marijuana isn't trying to hurt the patients, but help them find ways to reduce pain and side effects of their conditions. In conclusion, I believe that Medical Marijuana should be allowed in the United States at small doses to help people relieve pain and treat symptoms.
