Many slaves were not completely free even after they were granted emancipation or after the war. The Reconstruction plans pursued by different groups in power allowed for constitutional and legal rights of the former slaves, but did nothing to provide a way for those people to make a living During the years after the war.

Black and white teachers from the North and South, missionary organizations, churches and schools worked tirelessly to give the emancipated population the opportunity to learn.

Despite these major improvements, life for Southern blacks was far from perfect. "Black Codes," designed to limit the opportunities of blacks, were passed in the South during Reconstruction. Black codes restricted the right of blacks to own land or guns. even allowed the children of "unfit" parents to be apprenticed to the old slave masters

Despite overall terrible living conditions and the absence of freedom, slaves were more then powerless victims of their owners and the slave system. Slave families and communities became very important institutions. Slaves on large plantations also lived in a community that extended well beyond the family and in many cases beyond the single plantation or farm. The slave cabins or "quarters" provided one of the few places where slaves could be more or less free from constant supervision by slave overseers. There the slaves created a vibrant social and cultural life beyond the reach of their masters.

While no reasonable person would want to be a slave, the slaves were the masters of their own lives and thoughts And though their lives were different in many significant ways, they sought to make the best of their conditions. They succeeded to a remarkable extent, a great example of the human spirit's endurance.

" Confederacy's military and industrial employers typically only hired male slaves, much of the wartime agricultural work in Virginia fell to female slaves." The might of the work was led by the men but farming and every house hold thing was led by women.

"During the war, private employers like the Tredegar ironworks of Richmond, railroad lines, salt works, and iron forges, all of which sustained the Confederate war effort, hired increasing numbers of slave laborers as their white employees left for the army." the confederacy war effort had the help of many slaves during the war.

"Owners also leased their slaves to individual officers within the Confederate army or larger departments like the Confederate Medical Department, which hired hundreds of male and female slaves to work as nurses, cooks, and laundresses in army hospitals." Many slaves carried out being higher ranking officers assistant.

"The war increased the importance of slaves with industrial skills in the upper South's hiring market; the demand for hired field hands also increased as white men joined the Confederate army." While white southerners went off to fight the demand for slave increased at home.

From left to right:
The first 2 pictures seen are pictures of slaves before the civil war where they had the worst living conditions, and their masters were the cruelest.

-Why were they treated worse than other types of slaves?

The 3rd picture shows a group of southerners arguing with a group of freed slaves, separated by a union soldier. This shows how the north wanted to abolish slavery and how they succeeded.

The final 2 pictures show slaves after the civil war. They are embracing one another as some finally got to see their families again after many years. Also the 5th picture shows a town created by newly freed slaves, proving they knew more than their masters thought.

The hardest thing about being a slave would be not having the freedom a normal human should have.

3. No, because I wouldn't want my kids to have to grow up in the conditions that a slave lived in.

4. How hard was it for the slaves to get a decent education?

4. I believe it was extremely hard for slaves to get education and many could not get education until years later.
