Who would want to be friends with a wiggly, slimy worm? You can’t even tell which end is which! But there’s more to these lowly creatures than meets the eye. Kids are invited to find out where worms live, see how they move, and understand why gardeners consider them friends with the help of this humorous and informative look at an unappreciated — and fascinating — creature. A young boy was in his grandmother’s garden when she found a worm. He is disgusted by it, but his grandmother insists that he should be friends with worms.

Suitable for Year 1.

The book is a lovely story of how a boy learns about worms and his grandmother deals with his misconceptions as he learns more about the creatures. It is fiction book but also includes a lot of non fiction as throughout the story we are met with real facts about these creatures.

The story allows for lots of learning outside the classroom and cross curricular learning linking with mostly Science.

The read would be most suitable for whole class or guided read.

It presents lots of questions as many people have misconceptions of worms such as a worm cannot be chopped in half but it's tail will grow back if chopped off. It allows for lots of great discussion and fact sharing. It presents lots of writing opportunities in different text types such as: journal, fact file and letter.
