Water gains energy when it is fast moving or flowing it can gain energy before it spills down a hill or flows over a dam. Then the energy is converted into kinetic energy as the water flows downhill. The water then can be used to turn the blades of a turbine that then can generate electricity to peoples houses.

Inside the impoundment facility is a dam used to control the flow of water stored in a pool or reservoir and when more energy is needed water is released from the dam letting the potential energy turn into kinetic energy.
