 The term resource means that Everything available in our environment which can be used to satisfy our needs, provided it is technologically accessible and economically feasible and culturally acceptable can be termed as 'Resource'. 
Resource are not free gifts of nature.
These are a function of human activities.human beings themselves are essential components of resources.

1) Acc. to their origin :  
They are of two types
 I)Biotic  :    refers to plant, animal life and living organisms ,which have the ability to reproduce it's future offspring.
  and    
  ii) Abiotic.: refers to   physical environment present in the Earth.

2)  Acc.to Exhautability ; 
I).     Renewable   :  refers to the resourcs  which have the ability to renew and replinsh itself and so they are never exhausted after their contieous use.   
  ii)  Non  renewable.: refers to  the resources present in the nature , which are in  limited quantity and they cannot replinsh them , and so they get exhausted and become extinct. 

3)  Acc.  to ownership : 
I).  Private or individual  resource .: referes to resources ,which are owned individually or are under private ownership for example : Land , House,car etc.
ii)   Community resource..refers to those resources which are community owned resources example park , theatre, stadium etc.
iii)   National resource . are those Resources which are controlled by the government of a country and are found with in the boundaries of the state and are under the administration of that country 's Government .example : land , river bodies , mines , mountains , natinal heritage and buildings of historical importance .
iv) International resource.: refers to those Resources , which lie deyond the territorial boundaries of a country . it also covers 12 Nautical miles of Oceans beyond 200miles from the sea shore.

4). Acc. to Development :
I). Developed : refer to those Resources whose quantity and quality have been determined  ,i.e  they could be feasible with the current technology and capital.
ii) Potential:  Refers to the resources, which are  present in the nature but they are utilised because technologies is not there but they could be utilised as soon as th technology and means are ther.
iii) Stock:  are the resources that are presen in the nature but they cannot be utilised because pf lack of technology . For exaple  wind energy in Rajasthan.
iv) Reserve.: Are a sub part of  Stock  in which both the yhe technology and the capltal is not there and as soon as the availability of both are present, then they ccould utilised.

Development of resources ina country can be done by following four methods :
1) By mapping ,that whe the resources are found in abundance, so that they can be extracted.
2) by quantifying it .
3) and by determining it's quality.
4) And thhen extracting it judiciously so that it can be left for future use.

Resources can be classified ibroadly into two types:
1) Natural resources               2) Man made or 
                                              artificial resources.
Again natural resources can be further sub divided into two categories  i.e.
1) Renewable resources.:  are the resources present in the earth in unlimited quantity and they have the power to replinsh itself after it's use i.e they never gets exhausted and they renew themselves for its further use. For  eg : water ,air , sunlight etc.    They are further sub divided into two categories. They are  divided into two parts :
iiBiotic : which includes plant and animal life and they reproduce themseves to give birth to their offspring , so they never get exhausted .
ii)Abiotic : which includes all the physical component present on earth. Example : Air, water , sunlight.
2) Non renewable resource:  These resources are present in limited quantity  and they get exhausted after their use  and they cannot replinsh itself or they take time replinsh itself.
They are subdivided into two types :
I) Recyclable   and   ii) Non Recyclable.
I) Recyclable  resource: are those which  are present  in the in limited quantity but they can be again procesed to make a new object after it's use  for example all the metals present on the earth can be used again and again after smelting it and giving it anew shape and size.
 ii) Non - recyclable :  Resources which are found in limited quantity and took million of years to become resource such as fossil fuel like petroleum and natural gas comes in fossils fuel , when  they are used , then  not only  they  underphysical and chemical change and hence they cannot be revived in their original form.
