The PBIS tenets focus on specific categories of the school: Cafeteria, Bus, Hallways/Stairs, Classrooms, Bathroom, Arrival/Dismissal, and Assemblies. The following behavioral modes are assessed:

Responsibility - To perform every action as well as possible

Organization - To be prepared

Attitude - To be truthful with yourself and helpful to others

Respect - To show respect to self and others

Safety - To practice safe actions

These behavior goals transferred into academic success in that students were more focused in classes due to the attainment of prizes from the ROARS Store.

"Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based three-tiered framework to improve and integrate all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day. PBIS creates schools where all students succeed" (www.pbis.org). "By relying on concise rules and frequent rewards, principals say the PBIS approach to school-wide behavior management drastically reduces discipline problems and improves academic performance among all students" (www.educationworld.com).

The school district has adopted and implemented a school wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) program.

All schools within the district were mandated to create a revitalized student and teacher culture where all can work together to achieve a common goal.

Mickens Middle School implemented strategies from the very first day of the 2019-2020 school year. Teachers received training during the summer months of July and August. A PBIS team was put into place with a teacher from each grade level, a guidance counselor, and an assistant principal.

Mickens Middle School would be nothing if it were not for the assistance of the community. It is through volunteerism and acts of service that the PBIS program has made a tremendous impact within the culture of our school.

Various civic and social organizations were solicited as sponsors to our ROARS program via email and letters. Once communication was received by them agreeing to the partnership, they were invited by the principal to a community breakfast that gave the background of the demographics of our school, as well as successes, and areas of improvement that needed to be made.

Financial support was decided upon by creating a budget of what the school store would consider as "giveaways" to students 4 times a month.

The school district requires all volunteers to be screened by the state police through fingerprinting and performs criminal and sex offender background checks to ensure the safety of our school.

We know the safety of our children is first priority and only allow individuals who have successfully passed these checkpoints to enter our school.

The following community organizations have contributed to the success of our:

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters

Girl Scouts

Boy Scouts

The Links

The YMCA

Volunteers from these organizations manned our ROARS Store on Fridays and donated also to our ROARS Store with prizes such as school supplies, snacks, and bicycles.
