They didn't want slave to read or write at all because they thought this was the key to slaves to learn and rebel. A man name Nat Turner was the reason why Southerners dread slave rebellions. He was a religious leader, who knew how to read and write. Hhad led a group of his followers on a violet rampage, which cause 55 white men being dead and Turner being hung. This fear the white men and people, that they add more things on the slave code.

But another way they resisted slavery was by revolting. For example the most famoues revolt was Nat turners and he and the group of people killed 55 white people. The way slave master made it harder to revolt is by putting slave codes and making it so that they were not able to read. But there were still some slaves managed to teach themselves how to read and write. The slave master thought if the slaves did not read and write they will have a harder time to revolt.

But they couldn't they would attempt to escape, but they would usually get caught, or maybe they would get freedom, but only a few enslaved people got to be free. For example Harriet Tubman helped many slaves be free and her plan was a success. That shows how slavery was a big thing for African Americans back then.

This would give them the huge advantage for them, as for they would be able to fully understand and rebel against their masters or the whites. Rebelling and looking for the road to freedom became some what common back than. However, those who were caught would get a bad, if not, a severe punishment. Only very few would either have an impact on people's ways of thinking, or in general their life. Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, being the most common and successful people. As well as Nat Turner, Gabriel Prosser and Denmark Vesey.

Some ways in which African Americans resisted in slavery is by occasionally working at a slow pace or pretending to be ill. The slaves do this so that they can strike back at their masters and perhaps establish boundaries and respect from the whites. Education, however, is another story. Slaves also resisted against slavery by teaching themselves how to read and write. It was an advantage for them to use the power of knowledge as a weapon to rebel against their white masters. Resistance was the key to their freedom along with communication and spirituals. Escaping from slavery was their main goal overall. Even so, there is a downside to those who got caught on the path to freedom. The consequences could be bad or severe punishments. As you already know, the most common punishment for a slave would be getting whipped. Whereas, a severe consequence would be getting lynched or killed. This is why very few African Americans were able to escape. But, there was still hope. For instance, Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglass were also African American slaves who were born into slavery just like the others, and they were still able to escape the hardships of life. Except, the difference between Harriet Tubman/ Fredrick Douglass and the other slaves were that they had a weapon of knowledge in their hands. They used it to their advantage of planning an escape scheme.

They would do this by doing there jobs more slowly. Another way African Americans resisted slavery is they would annoy their master by setting fire to a plantation building or breaking tools. This action help them strike back at their white masters. The slaves would also fire back at the Masters by having a way to communicate with each other. This was done by singing spiritual songs from the bible.

African Americans resisted slavery in many ways. Some ways on how slaves resisted slavery was by poising their own masters food without them knowing. Salves would also go out and run away to the North this is because in the North they thought that slaves was a bad thing. African Americans resisted to slavery by trying to educate themselves so they can rebel and be able to read letter that were sent to them.
