In my opinion, our reliance on robotics can be considered as a good thing but also a bad thing. According to the article provided by Sir Mark, workers will lose their jobs in the future and be replaced by robotic automation. It seems to be a bad news for current or future workers who are performing tasks which require less human interaction. However, this problem still can be solved by job transition and yielding of new jobs that are closely related to technology.

We cannot deny the fact that robotics have improved our lives. In automotive field, robotics improve quality and reduce warranty costs. Besides, they can also help to prevent automotive workers involving themselves in dangerous and exhausting job. In other aspect like medical field, technology has indeed improved human's quality of life and saved lives, especially technology involving in complicated surgery and lab investigation methods which require shorter period to get a diagnosis.

The bad thing about our reliance on robotics is we humans will become too dependent on them as they are "smart" enough to accomplish most of the difficult tasks. This will lead to production of low-skilled workers and eventually lose their own career.

For me, I think that relying on robotics can be a good thing. We can't deny the fact that more and more procedures nowadays including medical procedures are using robots to aid in making life easier. For example, factories back then uses human energy to make things and it will take a long time to finish up the job. But nowadays, we can see that many factories are equipping robots to aid in the process of making things. This shorten the period needed to finish up things.

We also cannot deny that products that robots produce are much more better in terms of quality and quantity than hand-made products. For example in automotive industry, the car parts are more precisely cut by a robot when compared to human.

Yes Betty, I agree with you that even though robotics can bring harm, but they still bring more good than harm. Many industrial processes and medical procedures could not be done almost perfectly and in a shorter time without the assistance of robots.

Yes exactly. It also can improve our social skills especially for those who have problems in communicating with other people such as those with autism. I stumbled upon a story stating that in 2014, a boy with autism had developed a relationship with Siri which helped him to develop communication skills in the real world. This story was published in the New York Times with the title "To Siri, with love".

If we are worried about the unemployment rate increasing due to relying too much on robotics, we need to remember that we are the one who created robots. Plus, we still need humans to control the robots so I guess unemployment is not really a big problem here.

I agree on one of the statements where you stated that we humans will become too dependent on robots as they are smart enough to accomplish most of the daily and difficult tasks. That's why there are more and more couch potato people and it is not really a weird thing if in the future, the obese rates will be spiking and we become like what is happening in the animated movie Wall--E.

In contrast, I think that our reliance on robotics is NOT totally a good thing though. As mentioned by Cheng Yee, our reliance on robotics can both be good and bad things. And yes, I must agree with the fact that robotics had made our life easier with a better productivity. But when talking about wether our reliance to robotics is a good or bad thing, it all depends on how much we are relying on the robotics. Say for example, if we rely to much on robotics to do everything in our life including the basic stuffs. It may affect on how we manage or handle things. Moreover, we cannot ensure wether our future generations can cope with the life that are being pampered with robotics and technology.

Yes exactly, I strongly agree on the example that you proposed, Betty. Wall-E movie is one of the example that showing how bad it can be if we relied on robotics and technology too much. In the movie itself showing that the new generation do not even know much other than just sitting on their automated 'floating' chair. Even if one of their robotics servant broken down, it is not the human who fix it but the robotics itself. (This post is after Betty's last reply)

On the other hand, one of the negative perspective on relying to robotics is the increase of unemployment rate. Referring to the article given, it was stated that a more developed country like USA will have a more rapid increase of unemployment rate compared to a less developed country such as countries in Southeast Asia. However, I do agree on both of your statements indicating that there is another alternative solution to this problem, which is introducing a new job scope or industry that are related to technology and robotics.

Another reason why I think our reliance on robotics is not totally a good thing is because it will affect our social and communication skill as lesser interaction of human-to-human when reliance on robotics is more. For instance, I have been using a payment machine to buy prepaid credit for my phone. Since I am an introvert myself, I feel that it is more comfortable to use the payment machine rather than buying prepaid credit from store which involve interaction with people. However, I do feel that my reliance on using a machine instead of human-based services had worsening my social skill. But, at the same time, I do agree on Betty's opinion where she mentioned an article describing about how robotics had help an autism patient in terms of social skill. With this, just as what I had mentioned earlier, wether reliance on robotics a good or bad thing will be depending on how we use the technology.

In the end, however I do have to agree with both of your points stating that robotics bring more good than harm. Nowadays, usage of robotics is a norm and needed in every aspects of our life. Not only that it makes our daily life easier but also producing results or products in a more efficient way with better quality. To conclude the discussion on the topic, I think that robotics does bring more good than harm only if we use it in a better way and relying on it with a better purpose.
