social justice within movies by

We will be analyzing a variety of social justice topics within popular movies of this generation. The social justice topics we have chosen are: poverty, racism, bullying, and alcohol/drug abuse. It is important to analyze these topics within movies because they are viewed by all ages and can influence the way people think and act. The way movies persuade viewers is split in half: encouraging to behave badly or scaring away their audience. Either way, the appeals and people used in each movie persuades each viewer in a different way. By having celebrity actors/actresses viewers look up, encourages the audience to act more like their "role model." Age limits are set for certain movies based on the content it reveals. However, if for example, a child under the age of 10 watches a rated R movie, their street knowledge expands and they are not able to fully understand right from wrong, influencing them to be more like the people in the movie. Propaganda is everywhere in movies, for example, an athlete in a movie who uses Nike is advertising Nike to the rest of the viewers, persuading them that they should use Nike. However, the way movies are portrayed encourages behaviors through the actions and words of the characters making films sometimes harmful to watch. Therefore, the importance of analyzing how persuasion in movies effects their viewers is important to understand why people act the way they do or where they got their ideas from.

In addition, people are able to reiterate lines of movies they think are funny or memorable whether they are good or bad.

Virginia schools have been segregated for generations. One Black and one White high school are closed and the students sent to T.C. Williams High School under federal mandate to integrate. The year is seen through the eyes of the football team where the man hired to coach the Black school is made head coach over the highly successful white coach. Based on the actual events of 1971, the team becomes the unifying symbol for the community as the boys and the adults learn to depend on and trust each other. Written by LMN13
1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZVDBDzQoBE
2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFObqUd5uzA
3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cshMYPMKtIU
This is a great movie example that is against racist. At the beginning of the movie when the school and football team integrated they were together physically but not mentally. There was always fights, arguments, and racial problems between the blacks and whites. Football was the solution to the racism. The coaches made the players get to know a teammate from a different race and hangout with them. Once the players got to know each other more, trust each other and believe in each other the team became more as one week by week and became one of the best high school football programs in the nation !

A film portraying the struggles of Chris Gardner, played by Will Smith, after becoming homeless due to a bad investment of his life savings. The movie breaks the stereotypical idea that homeless individuals suffer through poverty because they are just plain lazy.

This movie is a great example about poverty because it shows how you should never give up and to chase your dreams. Will Smith says in the movie, "don't ever let somebody tell you You can't do something"... "If you want something go get it" This movie shows the hardships of poverty and losing jobs but with hard work like he says, you can achieve those goals and become successful.

http://www.borgenmagazine.com/10-most-inspirational-movies-about-poverty/

https://youtu.be/89Kq8SDyvfg
