The Catholic Church commemorates her death on November 22.
We do not know exactly when she lived, specialists place her lifetime between the year 150 A.D. and the middle of the fourth century.
According to texts found in the fifth century, Cecilia belonged to a patrician family in Rome, and was educated in Christianity. She used to dress austerely, fasted several days a week and consecrated her virginity to God. But her father married her with a young patrician named Valeriano. The day of the celebration of the marriage, while the musicians played and the guests had fun, Cecilia sat in a corner to sing to God in her heart and ask him to help her.
When the young husbands retired to their rooms, Cecilia, armed with all her courage, said sweetly to her husband:
- “I have to tell you a secret. You must know that an angel of the Lord watches over me. If you touch me as if I were your wife, the angel will be enraged and you will suffer the consequences; but if you respect me, the angel will love you as he loves me. ”
Valerian replied:
- “Show me. If he is really an angel of God, I will do what you ask. ”
Cecilia said:
- "If you believe in the true and living God and receive the water of baptism you will see the angel."
Valeriano agreed and went to look for Bishop Urbano. He educated him in Christianity and baptized him. When Valeriano returned to where Cecilia was, he saw an angel standing beside her. The angel placed on the head of both a garland of roses and lilies.
From that moment they dedicated themselves to spreading Christianity. This led to martyrdom and finally death.
Cecilia was sentenced to die suffocated in the bathroom of her house. But, as much as the guards put in the oven a larger amount of firewood, Cecilia spent a day and a night in the bathroom without receiving any damage. Then, the prefect sent a soldier to decapitate her. The executioner unloaded the sword three times on his neck and failed to decapitate her, escaping from there and left her lying on the ground. Cecilia spent three days between life and death. At that time the Christians came to visit it in large numbers. She was buried next to the pontifical crypt, in the catacomb of San Calixto.

In many paintings it is seen, however, among musical instruments, commonly playing an organ.

One explanation is based on the fact that, they say, the girl dedicated herself internally to singing to God while the musicians played at her wedding, agreed by her parents, although it seems an insufficient explanation.

But the Venezuelan orchestra conductor and music history teacher Jesús Ignacio Pérez-Perazzo points out what he believes are the two most plausible arguments for this.
In the first place, “the most likely fact to be related to music is that from a very young age, and in accordance with the customs and traditions of the Roman patrician families, Cecilia had to start and play some musical instrument, probably the lyre, the zither or some kind of harp used by the ladies of Roman society. ”
And to this he adds that in the aforementioned 'Acts of Martyrdom' it is written 'Candantibus organis Cæcilia Dómino decantábat dicens ...', which means: 'While the oven was red hot (the hot springs of her house where they tried to suffocate it), Cecilia sang to the Lord saying ... '
Pérez-Perazzo's thesis is that at some point the person who made the transcription “translated the word 'organ' - which at that time, in the third century, was used to refer to a kind of bellows, tool or tool to make insufflate something, by the neologism that names the current musical instrument that derived from the 'hydraulis' used by the Romans to animate the festivities of the Roman circus ”.
Hence the numerous paintings that show her playing the organ.
