The Texas Revolution (1820's)

During the 1820's Stephen Austin created a very successful colony in the Texas territory, the land bordering The Louisiana Purchase. This colony was formerly under Spanish government but after 1821 it switched over to the Mexican government. In order the stay a colony, the Mexican government demanded colonists to become Mexican citizens and be a member of the Roman Catholic Church. Under these strict laws, Austin's colony prospered causing many settlers from the United States to move into the land. While living in this land, the Americans and Tejanos often found them selves in conflict with one another. The Americans blatantly ignored the laws of the Mexicans and were unhappy that all official documents were written in Spanish. The Tejanos believed the Americans were difficult to live with and they believed the Americans thought they were more superior than the Tejanos. Asaresultof these conflicts, Mexican troops observed the colony and decided to close American immigration and tax the texans. Many Texans opposed this decision and began to rebel against the government. A group of 183 volunteers fought Mexican troops at "The Alamo" and all died except for five. The remaining five were executed and the extreme conditions of the Battle of Alamo showed Texans how hard it would be to gain independence from Mexico. Later on, Texans fought the Mexicans at Santa Anna's camp and killed more than half of them in eighteen minutes this was known as the Battle of San Jacinto. As a result, Mexico was forced to sign a treating granting Texas with the independence in which they fought for.

Hello, I am a Tejano here to tell you about the life I live in Texas. As I watch the American settlers move into our land, each day I become a bit more agravated. The settlers come into our land and believe it is ok to ignore the laws clearly stated by our government. Their ignorance to the laws which we must follow, shows how they act superior towards the Tejanos because they place them selves above the law. Also, they believe it is unfair that the official documents regarding this colony are written in spanish and wish some would be written in English. It is not fair that the American settlers come onto our land and demand special privileges when they don't make an effort to adapt to our lifestyle.

Hello, I am an American settler here to tell you about my experiences while living in Texas. First of all I do not see the importance of following the restrictions set to live in Texas considering we live a life of freedom and America just fine. Also, I believe it is unfair that the official documents in regards to Texas are written in Spanish because the Americans are unable to read and understand what they are saying. Lastly, slavery should not be banned because the we would like to continue growing cotton on this land.
