I think Winston is both because at times he will be a normal guy and then he will be crazy for example he was crazy about that girl he worked with following him. Some might say Winston could be a a hero but he doesn't have the risk to tell the truth to everyone about newspeak or oceania. Also how we don't know what actually happen in the past, so all we know is that the government could have lied.  I didn't realize this until I started reading the book. This book really so what the world will end up like , all about technology and lies.
