During about 500 B.C. Hippocrates created a bag sleeve to filter the water and get rid of all the bad tasting and smelling sands, sediment etc. In 1671 Sir Francis Bacon met an experimenter in water purification who succeeded by passing the water through 20 different “vessels” although it doesn’t specify what said vessels are. When he learned this he dug a hole in the sand to an ocean and figured out how to desalinate water by passing it through sand.

Ancient Chinese and ancient Greek records indicate that they would purify their water resources through coal, sand, sunlight, boiling the water, and straining. The Greeks and Romans used different methods to improve the quality of the water if it did not satisfy their quality requirements. From written sources and archaeological excavations, we know that using settling tanks, sieves, filters and the boiling of water were methods used. (Rome)In Ampurias,Spain, a city without an aqueduct, a filter was found composed of a circle of amphorae probably packed with charcoal and sand, to clean rain water.

The Wa-Fil

The Wa-Fil is a system that will run between the washing machine, the dishwasher and the filter system that we have in each individual house. On average a washing machine uses between 30 and 45 gallons of water per load and the average dishwasher uses between 10 and 15 gallons of water per cycle. This is overall a huge waste of water. What the Wa-Fil does is it sends all of the water from each load of laundry and dishes and runs it into a water filtration system which will purify the water. The water will then be run into a water storage unit that will hold the water until the next load of laundry or cycle of dishes is being run.

Our water storage unit will hold 90 gallons of water, but will stay between 50 and 20 gallons for normal function. Water will naturally evaporate throughout the process of the washing, which we can't control, but once the levels have reached a lower enough level of 25 gallons, the storage unit will automatically draw in water from the city's water lines until the water reaches the 50 gallon level in which the automatic shutoff will occur. The water will then be drawn from the storage container through another line that will connect it to the dishwasher and the washing machine and the whole process begins again

Cost

The cost for the storage container as well as the filtration system will be around $300. The instillation varies widely depending on your area but on average is around another $200.
