Ryan Parga
One of the challenges that the resistance movement faced was the independance and separation within the continent. This is evident when looking at maps of Africa pre-colonization. You can see many divided tribes, and how hard it would be for them to work against a common enemy,
Another challenge that the Africans faced was the armaments and technology that the Europeans brought with them. An example of the African forces being overwhelmed by the superior technology of the British is in 1893 when Ndebele troops attacked a British camp, but were quickly suppressed by the opposing force.

For example, five thousand Ndebele soldiers were overpowered by superior weaponry from the fight of Shangani River in 1893 (fact found by Amy Nguyen).

Alex Yoo, Period 2
One major challenge that Africa resistance movements and leaders faced during New Imperialism were firearms. From before the end of the slave trade in 1807, the British were interested in extending their economic and political influence into the interior of the Gold Coast. These efforts were met with stiff resistance on the part of the Asante kingdom. The Asante were able to defend their interests and freedom through a series of victories in battles with the British. However, in 1874 after a half century of defeats, the British defeated the Asante at the Battle of Amoafo. This victory paved the way for British colonial rule in the Gold Coast.

Charlotte Phan, P. 4
During the New Imperialism, African resistance leaders faced many problems, especially since they had to work for the Europeans. Resistance movements began to rise in Africa. In colonies with a growing number of settlers, the demand for more land and labour increased tensions between colonial authorities and the white communities that had settled in the colonies. More land was taken from African people and given to Europeans for settlement. Africans were forced to work for Europeans in order to paytaxes. Exploitation of African labourers by European employers added to the growing resentment among the local people.

The British had firearms, which overpowered the African resistance's weapons by a lot. This is evident in how in many historical events, the British didn't need armor to protect their people as their firearms got rid of lots of the opponents before they could do much harm. One example of this is the battle at the Shangani River where, even with surprise and numbers on their side, the Ndebele soldiers still were overpowered.

The first major challenge that African leaders and resistance movements faced during New Imperialism was that they had inferior weapons and technology. European countries had access to weapons such as the Maxim Machine Gun that were far better than African weapons. This helped the Europeans defeat the Africans in battle. For example, five thousand Ndebele soldiers attacked the British in 1893, but were defeated because the British had superior weaponry. Another major challenge was that many African men were sold as slaves, leaving a smaller military for African countries. Many African kingdoms relied on slavery to run their economy. They traded slaves for weapons, food, and other goods. For example, Behanzin exchanged over 700 men for German weaponry. Ultimately, most African leaders and resistance movements lacked weaponry to fight the Europeans and could not get weapons without losing able men to fight in the military. This caused them to be colonized.

They had to combat this by choosing specific strategic positions and making specific decisions to keep and push their home advantage. This can be seen in the battle between the Ndebele and the British by the Shangani River in 1893. Despite being overpowered by superior weaponry, the Ndebele lured the British out to an area where they had the strategic advantage, and they took advantage of their environment to wipe out the British.

Most attacking militaries at the time had strong weapons. These resistance groups had to trade their own people that could've been fighting for weapons to even have a chance. Behanzin did this because, without decent guns, the kingdom would fall because of attacking nations. Even when outnumbered, Maxim guns almost always beat spears and bad rifles.
