Literacy Acquisition for Students with Severe Disabilities: Making it Happen Through Assistive Technology (Jerome & Ainsworth, 2020)

Create adapted text! I love this idea that i read from this article because (in all honesty) I wish that I had adapted text for a majority of the texts assigned throughout the teaching program. They all have big words that I do not understand and they are so daunting to read that I never really gather the entire point of what the article (or peer-reviewed journal) was about. Use adapted text for your students to support their specific learning needs!

AT for Writing: Technology-based Graphic Organizers with Embedded Supports (Evmenova, Regan, & Hutchinson, 2020)

Use technology-based graphic organizers in the classroom. This does not only benefit students with learning disabilities but it rather benefits ALL LEARNERS! I would have loved on of these while writing essays in middle school and high school. This tool allows kids to sort out their thoughts while accessing assistive technology at the same time (text-to-speech, etc.). Kids have greatly improved the quality work they produce using these online graphic organizers.

Manipulative Apps to Support Students with Disabilities in Mathematics (Bouck, Working & Bone, 2020)

This article brought up a FANTASTIC point! The use of applications to bring manipulative into the math class is brilliant. It has many benefits including eliminating the need for connectivity (plug-ins), Internet, or concrete objects. The point that I loved in the article is that these applications also provide scaffolding for math learners. First they provide all the manipulative necessary for understanding an abstract concept, then they are eased away so that the student slowly becomes more independent in his/her understanding of the abstract concepts (eventually not needing the app at all maybe!). How cool!!!

I'm On It - Focus Timer

This was a cool thing! This is a timer that you can set for regular intervals to prompt the user to notice whether or not they are on task. It can be set for up to 60 minutes and the intervals can be adjusted to the user. This is great for students with ADHD and other attention needs so that they can be self-aware of their focus!

Okay I am finding wayyyy too many good ones on this technology quest! This is Flip Writer. The user types anything onto their device and they can easily interact with someone across from them as it flips their words so the other person can see them instantly. It is a simple idea that reaps great benefits for those who need and use it!
