What Harper Lee wanted people to learn from the book is how to see from an inside angle of how people are directly affected by the issue of prejudice and other issues along those lines. Harper Lee wanted people to walk away from this book having had learned something about how they really should treat people regardless of who they are and what they look like.

Three Examples

1. The first example is the instance of Tom Robinson being accused of rape and almost going down and being treated like an inferior person just because of his skin color, when in the end he was really just being set up. (Chapters 16/17)
2. There are a lot of derogatory names and terms being used in this book against people of color, and to refer to people of color. This shows the issue of prejudice.
(Throughout the whole entire book)
3. The last example that I have for the theme I chose in this book is that there are many, many instances that tackle prejudice of some sort, and all of the above continue to represent how it was in that time period.

One character in this book that represents the theme I chose was Tom Robinson. This man was directly targeted with extreme prejudice throughout his court case in the novel.

A symbol for the theme of prejudice could be a picture of a bunch of diverse people, but some are happy and some people's underlying thoughts were them being prejudice or others' gender, skin color, religion, etc.
