Failure to properly secure and protect confidential business information can lead to the loss of the business/clients.

Confidential information within wrong hands may lead to misuse to commit illegal activity such as fraud or discrimination. This can then result in costly lawsuits for the employer.

The types of information that should be protected are divided in to three categories, these are Employee Information, Management Information and Business Information.

Employee Information - There are laws which govern the confidentiality and disposal of "personal identifying information" such as an employee's Social Security Number, home address, e-mail address and others.

Management Information - Management information that are confidential such as disciplinary actions, workplace investigations of misconduct. Although disclosure of such information is not considered as "illegal", it can damage the attitude towards the workplace.

Business Information - This type of information may include "proprietary information" or "trade secrets". This refers to information that are not publicly known for the purpose of not revealing information to competitors.
