Zeus married a mortal woman, Semele, Princess of Thebes, who later gave birth to Dionysus. Hera, Zeus's immortal wife, was enraged when she discovered this. She decided to trick Semele into seeing Zeus's true form, a sight that a mortal cannot handle. This killed Semele, and nearly killed Dionysus who was still unborn. Zeus saved Dionysus and actually sewed him into his thigh until he was ready to be born. This way, when he was ready to be born, he was born a god. Dionysus ended up living on Mount Olympus with the other gods, though he was the only Greek god to have a mortal parent.

Dionysus was once kidnapped by pirates. A prisoner saw that every time they tried to tie up Dionysus the ropes just broke. The prisoner tried to convince the pirates that Dionysus was a god, but to no avail. Eventually, Dionysus grew vines around the ship to stop it from moving. He then morphed himself into a lion, ate the captain, and chased the crew off-board. Before the crew members hit the water, he morphed them into dolphins. He allowed the prisoner to go free to his family.
