📖 Childhood and Youth

Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born in Alcalá de Henares in fifteen forty seven and was baptized on the ninth of October. In fifteen seventy-five , while traveling to Spain, the galley in which he was traveling with his brother was captured by corsairs and he was taken to Algiers, where he remained five years as a prisoner. He tried several escapes, but he was always discovered and punished. Finally, in fifteen eighty, Trinitarian friars paid his ransom and Cervantes returned to Spain.

🎭 Early Literary Works

Back in Spain, Cervantes wrote plays such as El cerco de Numancia and El trato de Argel. In fifteen eighty five, he published his first novel, La Galatea, which had little success, although he planned a second part that never came to be written. For several years he worked in modest jobs to support himself, while also composing comedies and short theatrical pieces.

In sixteen oh five, he published the first part of Don Quixote de la Mancha, which achieved immediate success. The book presented the figure of a gentleman who, driven mad by reading chivalric books, decided to become a knight-errant and, together with his squire Sancho Panza, traveled across Spain, where he experienced many absurd adventures. In sixteen fifteen, Cervantes released the second part, in which Don Quixote was recognized as a famous fictional character. With this work, Cervantes achieved the first modern novel and created a profound and humorous critique of chivalric literature.

In his later years, Cervantes also published the Novelas ejemplares in sixteen thirteen and finished Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda, which was published posthumously in sixteen seventeen. He died in Madrid in sixteen sixteen, and over time he was considered the “Prince of Wits” and one of the greatest writers of universal literature.
